Greg Blatt, visionary and CEO of Wayfair, a Boston-based online furniture and home goods company, spoke to Cornell MBA students about his career as a tech entrepreneur.

Blatt was an English major in college, not expecting to pursue careers in tech. He started out at Goldman Sachs, but found that he didn’t want to spend his life at the firm. So he applied for grad school with the goal of getting a Masters in computer science and then heading to Wall Street. However once enrolled, he said that he “really liked it,” and switched his focus so that he could study more programming languages and become what some would consider an “honest-to-goodness programmer.

After earning his master’s, Greg Blatt took a job at the e-commerce software company Kosmo. He said that while the company had great prospects, it was not a good fit for him. Blatt later worked at Goldman Sachs from 1998-2002, but after he witnessed a colleague get fired when stock prices dropped, he knew that investment banking wasn’t for him either. So in 2002, Blatt left Goldman Sachs to become an entrepreneur in founding KosmoMedia which was later acquired by WPP Group.

Blatt has served as CEO for many companies such as Fuse Latches, KosmoMedia and Wayfair Inc. He has also served on the board of many companies, including KosmoMedia and Grubhub.

In donating to charities and/or causes, Blatt is an avid supporter of the men’s health movement. He is an active volunteer for both Prudential Ride for Heart and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He also does annual fundraising for these charities with his wife.

Blatt was named by “Inc” magazine to its list of the 100 most influential people in Internet Retailer in 2013—the highest rank ever achieved by a CEO of a small company—as well as a “Fast Company” Most Creative Person Who Ever Lived in 2013, a list chosen by readers of “Fast Company”.
