Liu Qiangdong attended the University of Science and Technology of China in Beijing, China where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemical engineering. He went on and obtained his Master of Science degree in computer science from Stanford University in 1992. In 1993 he founded one of the first Chinese Internet companies called K.e.co and produced e-commerce software which was then distributed on CD-ROMs by Lucent Technologies and Compaq Computer Corporation. He also received an honorary doctorate from Tsinghua University where they also created a namesake professorship, The Richard Liu Tsinghua Entrepreneur Chair Professor, in his honor.
